2.1.6. Search optimizing

All pages in HostedCMS have a function called search optimizing. Under search optimizing you can type enter relevant meta-tags. Meta-tags are the simplest form of search optimizing and are used to state a title, description and search keyword for each page. Meta-tag’s most important function is to be the title and description that will appear in the search engines, when the web solution’s links are found.

If you do not type in anything in ”Search optimizing” for one or more pages, HostedCMS will automatically generate the search optimizing on these pages itself. As the search engines typically will find the frontpage of your web solution, it is always a good idea to make a title and description for it.

Title

”Title” is the headline appears in the search results (it appears in blue when you search in Google). The title has a maximum of 70 characters. Google weight the first keyword in the title heighest, wherefore you should always write your primary keyword written first. Note that the first keyword can be written with a capital letter and that the primary keyword can be mentioned more than once in the title. This will give an advantage in the total weight.

Description

”Description” is the text you see in the search results. In the Google-results, this description is under the title. The description has a maximum of 150 characters, which gives you the opportunity to elaborate the title. It is very important that the keywords, which are essential in the title are repeated in the description. Also, it can be an advantage to include the most important keywords in the description more than once.

Search keyword

”Search keywords” also called ”Meta keywords” were originally used by the search engines, as a primary source of analyzing the content of a page. That is not how it works anymore. Hidde meta keywords originally thought as the web masters’ opportunity to inform the search engines about the content on the page. However, many people exploited the meta keywords and wrote keywords that had no relevance to the given page, just to draw attention. The inappropriate use of meta keywords caused them to be depriotized by the search engines. However, it is a good idea to write them anyway in manner that is reflective to the content of the page.

Link

The link to the page is auto-generated from the title that is typed into "page data". However, it might be a good idea to define your own link. A page called /shop-solution/ might weight better in relation to the search engines, if it is called /e-commerce/, should that be the reflective of the content.

You will have to create 301-redirect from old to new links, in case the old links are already indexed by the search engines. HostedCMS will automatilly generate these for products and product categories.

Assemble links (Canonical)

In cases where you hace the same content on more pages, it is important to use this function, as it makes sure that the one link refers to the next, whereby duplicate content is avoided.
