When pictures are uploaded through the admin to example news or products, the frontend automatically generates thumbnails. A thumbnail is a scaled version of the image, that the system automatically generates in full-quality from the original image. A thumbnail is generated only once, whereafter it is stored on the server according to the following principle.
Original filename:
test.jpg
Filename of a max width and height of 250 pixels:
test.w250.h250.jpg
All thumbnails are stored in the same folder as the original image. Thumbnails are generated from jpg, gif and png images. The background remains transparent by uploading png images with transparent background
Watermark
Uploading a watermark through the Design Manager, will automatically add it to all thumbnails. A watermark is always added in the lower right corner. For a technical description, read more in the Design Manager manual.
Crop / Cropping
If using the crop function of the image, the photo is cropped from the center out. See the following graphic.
